Meet our new Overlander's team member.  Kermit is over land vehicle number three (and the second 'we' have built).  We hope, that we now know what works and what doesn't (third time lucky) and will create the ultimate expedition machine that will see us around the entire continent of South America and beyond. 

We first Kermit build was as an ultra light weight camper conversion. We trailed him on our mini South America Expedition. The setup had its benefits, but it was also just too flimsy and didn't hold up to the daily life on the road and hardcore over landing off-roading.

What Worked:

  • His lightweight design of the rear meant that it didn't put any unnecessary strain on the truck. 
  • Again, the solar panels were amazing.
  • Fitting a super large 180ah leisure battery provided enough power for the whole night.
  • The cheap LED lighting from eBay was ideal.
  • The roof top tent was very spacious.
  • The water containers heated our water up perfectly. 

What didn't Work: 

  • Our 3 way fridge was just too big for the space we had.
  • Carrying propane was also a pain, as we needed new parts to fit gas bottles in every country. 
  • The instant water heater worked, but was questionable on a safety aspect.
  • Although roof top tents work for other, for our style of stealth camping we felt exposed and even with a machete next to us, there were some sketchy moments.  Also, putting it up and down every day was a pain in the ass.
  • Having our water on the roof caused some issues with handling, and when going over 1500m the build up in pressure inside the tubes would cause one end to shoot off.

Dougal began life as a Mountain Rescue Ambulane for Breacon Beacons in the 1970s.  He is now classified as a historic vehicle, so we thought we'd take him on a journey of a lifetime before he retired.

Before embarking we made a series of modifications to make it possible to live in  as comfortable as possible for the 13 months (the original plan) we would be using for him. 

After a full service and change of many of the old rusted engine parts we set to building the rear.  I (Gwyn) did all the electrics, plumbing and carpentry myself with the help of YouTube videos and manuals.  Over 20 days he was transformed from an old ambulance to a practical camper.

 What Worked: 

  • Large rear space was great for everyday living and stealth camping.

  • The solar panels were AMAZING.

  • The Smev sink and hob worked a dream.

  • The shower was a God send. 

 What didn't work: 

  • For the coutries we visited the water heater was somewhat redundant.

  • The construction of the rear was heavy.

  • Choosing a vehicle with an aftermarket engine and parts, caused some issues.

  • The sleeping area was a bit 'tight'.

  • The fridge wasn't vented correctly and heated the rear when it was on.

This was the turning point for The Overlanders in our method of travel.  Whilst planning our Overland North America Expedition we decided the best way to travel would be by RV.  Having researched what was available we found a company in L.A offering super rad campers for hire ie Escape campers.  

Travelling with this method offered us a cheaper alternative on accommodation and increased our flexibility in the country. 

After spending over 3 months in the van, we had fallen in love with it and our newly acquired taste for over landing in our own vehicle.  It was the start of something new.
